RE: 6 year old hurting other kids - please help!
Hellman's Real Mayonnaise is approved for Stage 1 on Feingold. There are others, but they are not the usual brands you'd find at a grocery store--more like Whole Foods. Kraft Miracle Whip (original only) is also approved, but it has an ingredient that some kids react to (titanium dioxide)

LAC you are an angel - thanks so much! (sorry I didn't get to the PM but you saw the reply first anyway )
It seems the Hellman's they get here has the TBHQ: http://www.unileverfoodsolutions.co.za/p...-25kg.html
But! WHOOHOO - one of our local stores stocks the Kraft Miracle Whip: http://www.woolworths.co.za/store/fragme...1000026494
So I'll try that and see how it goes. I'll feel better knowing there's none of the big 3 nasties, and will watch him for any reactions to the titanium dioxide- thanks for the heads-up.
tired mom - thanks so much. We do have OTs in SA, but everything is paid out of pocket. Government institutions are a joke, you either wait forever or they see you for 15mins, misdiagnose you, refer you to other people who take forever to see you and refer you back. So the only option really is the private one. It just get's pricey.
The schools are also difficult - we don't have 504s or IEPs here. The department of education has a blanket "inclusive education" policy but it's not yet law and no-one knows what it actually means for either party - how much help can parents and kids expect from the school, and what does government expect the school to do in cases where the school really can't offer much help - in rural schools the class sizes often surpass 50 to 60 kids per class, with little to no infrastructure and often unqualified teachers. It's a horrific situation for everyone.
Annnnd I'll stop there. I really don't like this country, and really want to get out, but that's a whole other story

Let me know how the Miracle Whip works out. I could check into mailing you Hellman's if it's not too pricey.

(((hugs))) LAC - thanks so much!!! It's so appreciated!
Got another note home from school that M's behaviour isn't "up to standard", he apparently isn't listening and was throwing stones at break.
Notes like these drive me crazy. Throwing stones at what? a wall? a tree? people? And yes it's different and matters. throwing at inanimate objects could just be boredom. Throwing at people is a whole other kettle of fish.
So after that sidebar... my point was that he's had tuna-mayo (with normal mayo) for lunch. Dunno how related it could be but think it's better to be safe here.

I am late getting to this, but my 5 year old seems to strike out when she feels like she is totally out of control. I have read that kids with spd are always in the "fight or flight" mode. So if your son is getting overloaded sensory wise and then having something sudden happen (like being pushed, or shut out of line) it may be that he is just reacting in the only way he knows how!
When we are having a bad sensory day, busy, lots going on, and my daughter is at her wits end and melting down, I will see her strike out, hit or throw something at other people. Normally she will not do this, she is friendly and easy going. But when overloaded watch out!
Maybe if you can talk to the teachers about giving "sensory breaks" letting him sit down for a few quiet minutes away from the other kids after a busy morning or activity you can avoid having this happen?
