Thought I would tell you about this day we had last week.
I live in the UK and we don't have enough information here. A family who has recently had their child diagnosed decided to have an awareness day for anyone who wished to attend. I have to say this was all done voluntarily. Favours were asked everywhere and it was very successful.
Flyers were sent out to schools, professionals and adverts in the newspapers. We arrived at the allotted place at 9.30 am where we were greeted with coffee, tea and biscuits and got to meet everyone. Tables were set out in groups and we sat where we liked. There were a table of OT'S who came and two OT s gave a talk completely on SPD. Questions were allowed along the way. We stopped for lunch, volunteers made this too. And a lovely lunch it was. On every table were sweets to snack on along the way and water and hankies which some of us needed when the organiser told of her tale of how she got there. The day continued with talks on how these kids feel and how to calm them. The day was very informative and it flew by. We all came out at 2.30 full of knowledge and people to contact for help. There was also someone who sold weighted goods and fidget toys that allowed us to try on and examine at lunch time.
She is going to put together another day which we are all invited too.
I was amazed at what can be done when you are passionate about something.
