Hi! I am the mother of a 7 year old son who was diagnosed with SPD 1.5 years ago. I am a member of a Yahoo group that Dan was on and am looking forward to a more personal way of communicating with others who understand SPD!

We live in GA and my husband and I have been married for almost 10 years. We also have a 5 year old daughter who is neuro typical. My husabnd was diagnosed with ADD in his teens but we suspect that it is really SPD. I am interested in hearing from others who think they may have dealtwith this as children and didn't know it or people whose spouses also have SPD. Another interest I have is how to deal with sibling stuff especially since my SPD son is picking up on the fact that his younger sibling is diffferent than he is and feels that she will out do him.

Now, for an embarrassing moment for me, lol. What was your user name over there? There are more than 3,000 accounts on SID-DSI AllAboutKids (assuming that's the one you came from), so I know several different people with stories similar to yours. I know, this is terrible, isn't it? Well, I probably know you, and will likely 'facepalm' when you tell me who you are, but I'm really not sure, lol.

This is one focus to this site. I am trying to create a site that will appeal to younger audiences, and male audiences in particular, two demographics that are often overlooked in the SPD world. This should, hopefully, bring in young adults and even teenagers who are suffering from SPD, many of whom will have likely just found out about it. I also know several people who are married to SPDers, and I'm hoping they make it over here too .

Ah, this. Well, as a guy who grew up with SPD, and who had 2 older and one younger sibling, I'm well aware of the issues that can come between siblings when one has SPD and the other doesn't. The goal, I would say, would be to find at least one area in which your son excels above his sister in many ways. Focus on his abilities, and hone in on that.

He's going to see his little sister succeeding in ways that he simply couldn't have, especially at that age. Will she outshine him in areas? Sure. Will he get disappointed about this? Probably, it seems logical enough. Is that the end of things though? Does he have to see her as his superior? Absolutely not.

I can't count all the times when my siblings have out shined me. When even my younger brother became more capable at several things that I was; when my older siblings started having boyfriends/girlfriends, when I didn't even have friends, let alone more intimate relationships. Well, these things all got me pretty darn depressed, true. However, I remind myself that, even though I haven't succeeded in all the ways my siblings have, I *have* succeeded in many other areas. If I focus on those positives, it helps to deflate the negatives.

I hope you guys get through this well. Hang in there! It's a tough journey, and a long battle, but it leads to great things, at the end of the day. Just remember that we'll be here for you .

I was diagnosed as bi-polar at 22 but i remember being exactly like my two sons who most def are severe spd diagnosed at 2.5 whos now 5 and my youngest son just last week at 2. I still have sensory issues like certain textures of things drive me nuts, weird combination of food preferences , or certain sounds. (My auditory and oral sensces are most affected). My parents never got me earky intervention or anything and my behaviours ( severe screaming fits that lasted hours throwing things physical violence toward siblings) continued into my adolescence as late as 16...i was placed on meds but that wasnt the right ones so it actually made things worse for a while. My research has turned up that untreated spd can actualy turn into mental health issues later on like bi-polar, so now my meds are stable and things are better although still have sensory regulation issues too. I dont know if this helps but thought id give it a shot.

We deal with this too although my son is 5 and his sister who is neuro typical is 3. Hannah is very outgoing and acidemically advanced somewhat at 2 she was counting to 20. Judah just made it to ten a few weeks ago at 5. We are so proud of both kids and try to aknowledge boths strengths individually. I chose activities at home that let them both shine not just one or the other. Judah knows hes different and it hurts to see him so confused, but we just keep working on his goals and he sems to like to strive to achieve when we can calm him down enough to focus. Dont get discouraged siblings are allies they have their issues but they do usually work it out in the end when they are still this young. Maybe find a common interest where they can both excell together?

I have a friend whose family has Bi-Polar and SPD running in it. The SPD aggrevates the Bi-Polar and can set it off.

One of the things that helped me figure out my own sensory issues was adjusting sensory inputs for my friend so that her Bi-Polar wouldn't get set off again. Additionally, learning which sensory changes to make to help her get out of a Manic or Depressive state made everyone's lives easier.

In a Depressive state she needed a ton of physical input. In a Manic state she needed the lights and noises turned off as well as any strong smells removed.

Doing these acts wouldn't necessarily get her out of the Manic or Depressive state, but it would let her ease herself out of those states faster.
