My son is 5 and suppose to go to kindergarten next year. I learned today that his day care will not allow him to stay any longer. He had 6+ tantrums a day. After diagnosis of SPD, an anxiety disorder and an adjustment disorder we started counseling and parent coaching his tantrums went down in #, but he is now more violent - poured yogurt on a kid, slapped another, threw magnets at another. He says it is because they talk talk talk and he just wants them to stop. He said they are in his ears.....he has auditory issues as you can tell. He also is the most empathic child you could meet so he feels so much shame when he acts out. Anyway - I am in Houston, Tx and need to find an appropriate daycare at least until August......if the OT and therapy work, he could be able to start first grade. But for now, i just need a new daycare that goes through the summer. I have to work and have no family in town. Any help is appreciated. As you all seem to know this is a rollercoaster of emotion - today, I am scared and lonely - my partner thinks it is all behavioral and with better discipline he would shape up.....anyway. Thank in advance!

RE: trying to find day care
mbeck, aren't there any special programmes, for eg that take autistic / tourette's etc kids, who have space for him just until August. I realise this isn't ideal but at this stage it sounds like he is battling and needs to be in a smaller, quieter class with less going on and people who are more attuned to special needs and possible meltdowns and might have more experience redirecting / managing them?
If not, are there any churches in your area where you might be able to find a granny who can help you out just until then? Being with someone one-on-one might be just what he needs, and I'm sure if you explain what's going on that could work?
Apart from that, could you go back to the daycare and ask if they will reconsider letting him stay with some headphones/earplugs to cancel out all the noise that is bothering him? Ask them if they will allow that, and breaks when he's starting to act up - either on the playground or an empty classroom or the gym - if he can have a beanbag and some quiet time, maybe to look at a book or listen to a story or a music cd he likes, it might help him settle enough to go back to the class.
I'm sorry you're having such a hard time... hope you can work something out.
