New,mos glad I found this forum!
My name is Ashleigh, my son who is 3 and a half was diagnosed with spd 4 months ago. I am here to get support on our daily challenges and some new strategies.
He currently sees an OT once a week and we supplement during the week as well doing OT homework. He is hypo sensitive mostly, his auditory is hypersensitive. His behavior is awful and he is a master manipulator
So we are trying our best to not give into his current behaviors but we struggle so much. We may be seeking the help of a behavior specialist. Anyone else here see one?
Thanks in advance for the sanity I will be given from this forum. I guess I feel like my child is the only one with these issues no one really understands...unless you live it.

Hi I've been there and not too long ago either. If your son has been diagnosed with spd i would let some of the sensory therapy work before a behavior specialist, unless they have experience with spd. My son is 41/2 and is hypo sensitive also. He also has social and relationship issues.
we work with a clinical social worker with sensory intergretion training once a wk for an hr. She helps us build our parent/child relationship as well as social skills. Our son between the mild to moderate spectrum, but had gotten to the point with tantrums that i could barely leave the house w/o help. Your child is not the only one w these problems. I've felt the same way so many times. I only even heard on spd in Jan when we took our son for counseling. Thankfully they could see it for what it was. I thought he might be ADD,ADHA, or even autistic. We've had him evaluated by a child psychologist and so far spd seems to be the only thing going on. Since starting counseling and ot (twice a wk for 30min) he has become a different boy We still have our meltdowns and every day is a marathon till bed w sensory play, music therapy, one on one relationship play. But its worth it when he is able to communicate w us and calm himself down b4 completely losing it. Try asking ur ot about music therapy and maybe look for a counselor w SI experience to work on behavior issues. I will keep ur family in my prayers. Just keep at it. If you have any questions u can private message me or post

Yes we did do music therapy. He is auditory hyper sens and responded extremely bad to the music . His emotions were so heightened it was like he was manic depressive. We tried a couple different levels and the only thing he could handle was nature sounds. Our OT said we will stop for now and maybe pick it back up when he is a little older. The counselor is an interesting suggestion...I will ask my OT about it. My sons OT is also done while he is at school so it is rare that I am there for a session, but because I work full time and one of his main issues is social relationships, so it's great she can work on that with him at school. He is in a Montessori school and they have made some amazing accommodations for him, we are very blessed.
It is amazing to see the transformation too....just taking it one day at a time. Cherishing the good days and try to put the bad ones behind us quickly...
Good luck to you guys to, it is so comforting to know there are other families out there dealing with this.
