Today, my nearly 7 year old caught a tennis ball 10 times in a row!! Prior to that, he'd catch one maybe 1 time. He was on a balance board and the therapist was throwing balls to him gently and I saw a light go on in his eyes and he said "I have to watch the ball." and he did it!

I'm not sure everyone would understand, but I know people here will. I was so happy, I nearly cried. I have known for years something was not quite right with Samuel's development. And now I'm getting answers.

And even better, this OT/PT/Speech therapy place deals with sensory issues and I didn't even know that when I took him there. When I mentioned SPD the therapist didn't blink, and after the session when we were talking, she was explaining to me why Samuel was doing better at throwing and catching while on a balance board. She said that people with sensory issues often do better because they have to concentrate..... I didn't have to explain my son to her.

The hard part for me is to think back to all the little things that I didn't realize were all part of the same issue... his extreme fussiness/neediness as a baby, his not eating solids til he was over a year old, and many other little things. I wish it wouldn't have taken me so long to figure out where to go for help.

Isn't it WONDERFUL when someone "gets it"? It's so nice that his therapist knows him and what makes him tick! I'm so happy for you-and Samuel, too!!

I think back sometimes and it seems so obvious to me. But I hadn't heard of SPD until much later. I just remember reading the checklist and being amazed at how accurate it was for my older son. I couldn't believe that even flicking the light switch on/off all the time was there. It was my "aha" moment!

Yeah it's amazing. It's interesting when you know your kids and watch them. I always knew what was going on with him was off, and for awhile I thought it was dyspraxia, I did read about SPD awhile back but my husband wouldn't listen. He said Samuel was fine. Husbands He thought I was just overreacting.

It's funny, I was in the car and Samuel was talking about catching the balls... he said more than once that he figured out he had to just watch the ball. But when I asked him about before when he didn't catch it.... whether he was watching or not, he said he was. He didn't understand what was different this time, only that it was. Very interesting

He even told me one day that he doesn't always feel his body, but he never loses his feet cuz they are always touching the floor. I had asked him because I was reading about prioceptor dysfunction and I was curious. IT's quite fascinating actually
