New to SPD and STRESSED
Hi
I am a single mother (completely single no help or support from anyone) and my 6 yr old has been diagnosed with SPD. I have been trying to educate myself on the subject but its hard when his school doesnt respond when I ask for help. There are no support groups in my small city and I dont know anyone else who has a child with SPD here. His after school care doesnt know what to do with him and they are to crowded to do the things I have suggested. If there are any other single parents out there with an SPD child do you have any advice to give on how to handle the stress of handling all this on your own? Thank you!!!

RE: New to SPD and STRESSED
Hi, bigred, welcome! I'm not single. I'm sorry to hear that you don't have any support. That does make it very stressful. Has your son just recently been diagnosed? Does your son have an IEP/504 at school?
I haven't come across any support groups in my area. I have found it helpful for my son to go to a social skills group at a psychologist's office. The doctor specializes in SPD and autism spectrum disorders. There are 3 other boys in the group, one who is PDD-NOS, one who is SPD and ADHD, not sure about the 4th boy, and then my son with SPD and anxiety. The parents are all out in the waiting area and we talk while the boys have their session. We don't always talk about SPD but it's nice to be with others who know what you're going through.
Does your son go to OT? Maybe the OT knows about support groups in your area?
I hope we can help, at least be an ear to listen when you need to vent!

Hello and welcome! I'm sorry I don't have the single mom perspective, I'm sure you're not alone.
