Questions re: the OT evaluation
What was your OT evaluation like?
DS (5) had his eval by OT and PT the other day and all they really did was play with him for an hour. PT was really pleased, doesn't see any muscle tone, and his gross motor is on par. OT said he would call later to talk with me as he mostly observed him in play. They did try him with a bucket of water and he stuck his hands in that no problem (he has no aversion to a bucket of water), and they turned a radio on low - which did cause DS to snap his head around to see what was going on, and he walked away a couple times and DS definitely was twisting his head to see where he went, but really other than that, it was typical play and DS looked like a typical boy.
How is THAT supposed to indicate SPD?
So as I said, I didn't find out anything, he said he'd call. He did make a comment to me, something about: "Sometimes children have a reaction to something, that might be sensory rooted, but then it becomes a habit and they use it just to get out of doing something they don't want to."
I wasn't sure I liked what he was saying there. It seemed as though in his opinion, in order to have SPD - the child has to be tactile defensive to ALL touch, ALL the time, or all sound all the time. And yet, I think we all know that's not the case!
I mean, some days DS will put his socks on no problems, and other days they cause meltdowns. Yesterday he had a fit over his pjs (crying, stripped himself down, because the seams were hurting him), yet he's worn them before no problem.
Anyways, I just left there frustrated.

RE: Questions re: the OT evaluation
I got frustrated reading it! I know they look for different things thru play, that is pretty much what OT therapy is, is playing with stuff that cause them problems ( from my experience anyway). Wait and see what they say and if you don't like what they have to say maybe you can request a different OT to eval.
