My daughter has not been diagnosed with SPD (yet - we have appt. with OT), but getting dressed is turning into a nightmare and I wonder if anyone has dealt with this or has suggestions? She only wants to wear tight leggings (no "loose" pants) or skirts and short sleeve shirts. No loose sleeves, long sleeves, long pants or jeans, no pretty dresses with puffy sleeves. She says they all feel too big, or are bumpy, or just not right in some way. I did get her to wear super soft (tight - 1 size too small) long sleeve pj top to preschool today. She only likes 2 pairs of shoes. Socks and tight seams must be perfectly straight. She will not wear long pj bottoms, only shorts. She often complains of being "hot." Getting ready to go anywhere is usually agonizing. She get mad if you try to get her to wear anything than what she chooses, or jacket if cold outside (no long sleeves). SOmetimes she will pick out something, put it on, and 5 mninutes later wants to change b/c it doesn't feel right. Anyone been through this type of behavior? She is easily frustrated, for example, she is sensitive to having a stuffy nose and gets furious if her nose is running or stopped up, she screams, cries, kicks b/c I cannot fix it immediately. I don't know if this makes any difference but she has been diagnosed with asthma also, althought it is under control with daily inhaler. Thanks.

I know the feeling, my son won't wear denim of any sort! He lives in sweatpants, or "comfy pants". Have you tried Under Armor? My son's OT suggested that to me for him. It is soft and tight, short or long sleeve. The socks are an issue here too if they are crooked in the least bit forget it! He comes home with his shoelaces in his pockets because they came untied and are not even in length! UGh! At least leggings are in style,?!? When my son comes home he strips down! Except for the pants. Has to feel like sandpaper rubbing against their skin all day! That would be horrible! When yo usee the OT ask about the brushing technique, look on one of the forums, someone gives a play by bplay of how it feels. Remember inhalers are a steroid, ( my son is on them when he gets sick) that enhances hyperactivity and the sensory issue I have learned! If I come across anything for you I will post !!!!

Thank you! What is Under Armor? I have been looking at the brushing technique and hope to do that. I also bought her an electric toothbrush today, I read somewhere that might help(?) She likes it. I have discussed the steroid issue with her doctor, we tried to do Singulair instead but she wouldn't take it. It might be worth trying that again.

Under armor is a brand of compression shirts that are used for athletes. They are nice and squishy, and give just a little bit of deep pressure input. Have you tried specifically long sleeves that are tight to her skin? It might be worth trying that at a store to see if that feels better. Long sleeves and long pants, specifically tight to skin, and then other things over that for warmth might be an option and might not be, but is a thing worth looking into. I know I personally can't deal with stiff clothing, so you need to take that into account, but compression garments definitely help with what I can wear. I need to buy some winter-based compression clothing.

Under armor isn't the only brand, its just the one that is most reliable of the brands I know about.

I definitely would look into the deep pressure protocol for her. I've been doing the protocol (am the person who's been posting notes about it as I've been doing it), and its definitely been helping.

I definitely prefer compression clothing, and have certain types of clothing I prefer over others. What I can wear varies time to time. It's a hassle.

I believe the deep pressure protocol is the Wilbarger Brushing Protocol. I do not recommend that you do it until it is prescribed by your OT because if it is not done exactly right it can cause regression instead of helping. Just a few minutes on UTube and you'll find many different ways to do it, but there is only one prescribed protocol, and in my opinion, it should be followed. We did it for six weeks for our 5 y.o. daughter. We saw some improvement in her ability to calm herself down, but after 6 weeks, it no longer had any effect, so we discontinued it. That's not to say we wouldn't try it again in the future if prescribed. If your OT prescribes it, you can purchase a three pack of the brushes on amazon for less than $10 I believe.

Target has a generic under armor brand. VIbrating toothbrush I forgot about that, my son loves anything sour! HE eats lemons, that is his favorite fruit! lol

We went to eh museum SUnday and coming down the stairs he showed the first time ever a fear of going down the stairs he took deep breaths all the way down! You could see the anxiety in his face! Layers, layers, layers. There are so many wonderful, warm, thin fabrics out there now (thanks to skiers, mountain climbers and bikers, runners, and the like) that I think a kid can get away with no coat if you put on three or four layers of insulating shirts, especially if your kid likes the underarmour clothing. Check out one of the outdoor enthusiast websites, like campmor.com, theclimb.com, backcountry.com (just do a search for childrens outdoor clothing.) Instead of shopping in a kids or department store, shop at a place like Sports Authority or Dick's Sporting Goods, and you can get great deals on kids ski wear that's very warm, thin and light--not PUFFY! Good luck. Fortunately for me, my daughter is always cold, so she loves her puffy coat.
