How I conquered grocery shopping - LaneSensorina - 06-30-2011
Hi everybody!
Within eighteen minutes of passing through the automatic glass doors of the grocery store, I would go from determined to stupefied. The exact progression was: determined, stoic, annoyed, desperately annoyed, angry, exhausted then, lastly – barely functional enough to check out.
But it got better...

Great entry! As far as I know I do not have SPD and I can still relate to a lot of that grocery store overload, in part I think because I'm one of the ones toting the kids that tend to scream ;-) We love the farmer's market, but they don't have everything there of course.

Due to my inhallant allergies I am unable to grocery shop safely without risking an emergency room trip for anaphalyxic shock. But prior to that the sensory hell I experienced in grocery stores made it increasingly difficult to manage and my husband completely took over that responsibility.
If I every have to grocery shop myself again, I will probably need to wear a gas mask. One of the big hideous ones that filters air.

We used to have a fabulous open air farmers market near here years ago. Now the closest one is thirty minutes away and it's only open on Saturdays, early in the morning. It's a problem living in a city that has 100* temperatures with 100% humidity in the summer. Everything needs to be inside and air conditioned

Great post, sensorina! I noticed this too. Whenever I leave my apartment, my senses are bombarded, so my brain automatically turns off my focal vision and reduces my peripheral vision, and my eyes never leave the ground in front of me. I couldn't tell you what was standing 3 feet in front of me. But if I use ear plugs and/or sunglasses, my vision returns and my eyes feel free to look up. The space around me expands to the walls and ceiling. I never knew grocery stores had walls or ceilings before.
