Therapy Swing - AngelaVA - 11-08-2010
We have had to cut back on OT because of the cost (insurance only pays for 12 sessions a year
) I can practice most of the things at home except for the swing activities unfortunately, which really seem to help her be calmer and happier. I am, unfortunately, seeing the negative effects of her not being able to do this as frequently. She does 2 different ones, one they call a "superman swing" where she is on her tummy in sort of a sling and the therapist has her hold on to a stretchy band a swing around. The other they call a "horsey swing", it is a long padded beam going horizontally with a rope on each end. Has anyone had success setting up a home version of either of these?

Well, I haven't set up either of those types of swings myself, but I have seen them in use at OT clinics. I have also used the sling-style swing personally at OT. We tried to set up a platform therapy swing in my basement a couple years ago, but it never worked. I hear we had it up for a second, but it wasn't supported well enough. It still sits there, half completed in the basement, lol.
I'm not sure if anyone here has tried to set either of those particular types up yet, but hopefully someone will come along sooner or later who will be able to help you out. Figures, new forums...

I thought I would revisit this because I was curious about it. Sad to see they all have a weight limit of 300 lbs.

They really have all kinds of fun things here! And from the comments I've seen about these in other places, everyone has liked the quality and safety on these.

If it is like the one at OT it swings in every direction and I don't really want her crashing into walls or anything though. I wonder how much space it would take to keep everything safe?

Just to be safe, I'd measure the distance of the chain/hanging device and make room that distance away from the center all around. That way, she's not likely to hit with feet if she has her legs hanging out, etc.
