picking a new pre-k school - stephanievt97 - 02-26-2015
Due to behavior issues, we are looking at new daycares for our 5 year old (starts K in the Fall). He has not been diagnosed with SPD yet (hope to get an appointment soon), but we're all pretty sure that's what's going on. At his current school, they put all the "misfit/get into trouble" kids in one class. I don't like that they did this, but they did. Teachers say he does better in small groups (not sure if it's really that or just because of the make up his class). Transitions are a problem for him too they say. He's easily frustrated and then gets physical because he doesn't have the problem solving skills. At home, he is the most loving person I've ever met.
Our 2 options are: (1) a class of 28 with 3 adults or (2) a class of 20 with 1 constant adult. They rotate to 4 classrooms for Language Arts, Art and Dramatic Play, Science and Math, and Gym and Music. Those 4 areas are taught by a specialist and the classroom teacher who rotates with the class.
I don't like that many kids for option 1.
I don't like all the transitions for option 2, but then also wonder if the physically having to move from room to room is good for him (kind of like taking a small break).
My stomach is in knots trying to decide what's best for him. Any thoughts?
Thanks so much!
